Admitted by your peers.
Medical malpractice coverage governed by the physicians it covers. The Standards Group decides who is admitted, and admits only the best performing physicians in each specialty.
How Cornerstone works
Admitted by the Standards Group
Your application is read by the four practicing physicians of the Standards Group, against standards they wrote for your specialty. They admit only the best performing physicians. The answer is admit, admit on terms, or decline, and it comes with a reason.
Priced for your specialty and state
An independent actuary sets the premium from the same loss data the commercial market uses. You see the number, the limits and the policy form before you decide.
Defended on your terms
Claims are paid from reserves, with reinsurance at Lloyd’s above a set retention. Defense counsel is chosen for your specialty and your state, and no claim is settled without your consent.
The Standards Group
Four practicing physicians who decide who is admitted to the captive. They write the standards for each specialty, read every application against them, and admit only the best performing physicians.

The membership is re-underwritten every year by the same four physicians, on the record. Selection is the product. A pool of carefully chosen physicians has better loss experience than the market, and the people best placed to judge a surgeon’s practice are other surgeons.

For physicians
Independent physicians and physician-owned groups in the specialties the Standards Group writes. Admission on your record, against standards written by physicians in your specialty, with consent to settle in your name.
For PAs, NPs and physical therapists
A policy in your own name, with your own limits and your own consent-to-settle right, under standards written for your profession. The claims service and the physician review are the ones that serve the physician members. The limits are sized for the profession. The standards are not relaxed.
Questions about Cornerstone
What is a physician-owned malpractice captive?
A physician-owned malpractice captive is a licensed insurance company that writes medical malpractice coverage for the physicians who fund it and is governed by them. Cornerstone Indemnity is this platform’s medical malpractice captive. Members are admitted by the Standards Group, pay premium set by an independent actuary, receive a policy in their own name, and keep consent to settle.
What is the Standards Group?
The Standards Group is four practicing physicians who decide who is admitted to Cornerstone: James McAtee, MD, who leads it, Paul Slosar, MD, Jay Gilbaugh, MD, and Luis Tumialán, MD. They write the admission standards for each specialty, read every application against them, and re-underwrite the membership every year. They admit only the best performing physicians.
Who is eligible for Cornerstone?
Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and physical therapists whose practice meets the standards set by the Standards Group for their specialty. Admission is decided by physicians, specialty by specialty, on the applicant’s record, training and practice, not on a premium quote alone.
What does consent to settle mean?
Consent to settle means a claim against a member is not settled without that member’s agreement. The policy sets out the member’s rights, the escalation path to physician review, and the limited circumstances that protect the pool. It is a design feature of the policy, not a courtesy.
